Manageability and Monitoring

Cisco provides tools that can make managing your Cisco CallManager system simpler and faster. The Bulk Administration Tool (BAT) helps you perform add, update, export, and delete operations on a large number of users or devices through a single transaction. The CDR Analysis and Reporting (CAR) tool helps you manage billing records, among many other tasks. In addition to these manageability tools, there are several monitoring tools. Monitoring your system with the tools described in this chapter can help you make sure your system is running efficiently and pinpoint the cause of problems when they arise. They can also be used to help you plan for expansion and ensure quality of service (QoS). The following products are discussed in this chapter:

  • Bulk Administration Tool (BAT)
  • CDR Analysis and Reporting (CAR)
  • Cisco CallManager Serviceability
  • Real-Time Monitoring Tool (RTMT)
  • Microsoft Performance
  • Trace Collection Tool (TCT)
  • Event Viewer
  • Terminal Services Client
  • Virtual Network Computing (VNC) Viewer
  • CiscoWorks IP Telephony Environment Monitor (ITEM)
  • Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Management Information Bases (MIB)
  • Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP)
  • Voice Log Translator (VLT)

The shaded blocks in Figure 6-1 illustrate the software layers and blocks within CallManager that contain manageability- and monitoring-related functionality. Unlike the other block diagrams in this book, Figure 6-1 is completely shaded. Because virtually every component in CallManager logs alarms, constructs CDR information, receives provisioning information through BAT, logs trace information, or sets CallManager performance counters, not a single CallManager layer or block escapes manageability and monitoring.
