Chapter 9. Maintaining and Troubleshooting a Network Infrastructure

In a utopian world, you could simply install an operating system and forget about it after that. Unfortunately, in the real world, you can't actually do thatWindows Server 2003, even as advanced and easy to use as it is, still requires you to have a basic level of monitoring and troubleshooting skills when things on the network aren't working quite right.

This chapter covers objectives from the "Maintaining a Network Infrastructure" section of Exam 70-291.

Objectives

Monitor network traffic. Tools might include Network Monitor and System Monitor.

  • Many times, you might discover that you have a network traffic problem without knowing the cause. In cases such as these, you can use the Network Monitor and the System Monitor to monitor and analyze the system in an effort to determine where the cause of the problem lies. You can use the Network Monitor to monitor raw network packets traversing the network and look for items such as broadcast floods. The System Monitor's counter objects can be used to monitor various aspects of network performance.

Troubleshoot connectivity to the Internet.

  • You will undoubtedly have problems reaching the Internet from time to timeconnectivity problems are a fact of life in the ever-changing network-centric world in which we live. Several tools are at your disposal to determine where the connectivity problem lies.

Troubleshoot server services.

  • Diagnose and resolve issues related to service dependency.

  • Use service recovery options to diagnose and resolve service-related issues.

  • Many times, the failure of one service can cause a domino effect, and dependent services can also fail or become stuck. The Services console provides the information and management tools you need to ensure that your server's services are operating correctly. In addition, you can use the Event Viewer to get additional information on a service that has failed to start properly.

Study Strategies

  • Get familiar with the usages and limitations of the Network Monitor and the System Monitor. After doing so, you will realize that you can use these tools and other third-party applications to effectively monitor network traffic on a network.

  • Get your hands dirty. The Step by Step exercises throughout this book provide plenty of directions and exercises, but you should go beyond those examples and create some of your own. If you can, experiment with each of the topics we discuss in this chapter to see how they work and why you would use each one.
