Permanently Importing Universe Components

 < Day Day Up >

With some of the pitfalls of linked universes, you may decide it is better to maintain two separate universes rather than linking. You may decide to do this in an initial build, in which case the link helps save time only in the build process and not in universe maintenance, or you may decide to do this after a period of time. Either way, you are essentially importing certain universe components (classes, objects, joins, aggregate navigation. . .not custom hierarchies, contexts) into a new universe. After the initial import, there is no relationship between the derived universe and the kernel universe. To import a kernel universe into a derived universe:

  1. Select File | Parameters | Links.

  2. If this is a previously linked universe, highlight the Name of the kernel universe you wish to import. If this is an initial build, click Add Link, then select the universe.unv file from which you wish to import components. Click Open.

  3. Click Include.

All previously dimmed tables, classes, and objects now appear as regular components of the universe.

Caution

Once you break the link by clicking Include, you cannot switch back to a link. The Undo button is not available. If you need to recover the link, do not save the universe.
