acceptance

The formal process of receiving a deliverable.

accrual method

Determines when the cost for a resource is incurred, and when actual costs are charged to a project. You can incur costs at the start or the finish of a task, or prorate during the course of the task.

activity

The smallest self-contained unit of work within a project.

actual

Information that shows what has actually occurred.

actual cost

A cost that has actually been incurred to date.

actual cost of work performed (ACWP)

Shows actual costs incurred for work already performed by a resource on a task.

ACWP

See actual cost of work performed.

adaptive menu

A program menu that displays only the most commonly used commands and tasks; Microsoft Project 2002 and all Microsoft Office XP applications use adaptive menus to simplify each programís menu structure. Also known as a personalized menu.

administrator

A person responsible for setting up and managing user accounts, assigning permissions, and helping users with network or server-related issues.

ALAP

See as late as possible.

alternative resource

A resource that can be substituted if another resource is not available.

as late as possible

An activity for which the early dates are set as late as possible without dallying the early dates of any successor.

as soon as possible

An activity for which the early dates are set as soon as possible; this is most often the default activity type.

ASAP

See as soon as possible.

assignment

A specific resource assigned to a particular task.

assignment unit

The percentage of a resourceís time that the resource is assigned to a task.

AutoFilter

A feature of Project 2002 that enables you to filter information on a field (column).

BAC

See budget at completion.

base calendar

A calendar that can be used as a project and task calendar, specifying default working (and nonworking) time for a set of resources.

baseline

A ìlocked downî version of the project plan that isnít affected by status updates; a baseline can be used for comparison with the current schedule.

baseline dates

The original planned start and finish dates for an activity or project.

baseline plan

The original project plans used to track progress of a project.

BCWP

See budgeted cost of work performed.

BCWS

See budgeted cost of work scheduled.

bottom up

A method of estimating costs based on establishing costs for each individual activity, and rolling them up into the total cost estimate.

budget

The planned or estimated cost for an activity or project.

budget at completion (BAC)

An estimate of the total project cost.

budget element

See resources.

budgeted cost of work performed (BCWP)

A variable that indicates how much of the taskís budget should have been spent, given the actual duration of the task.

budgeted cost of work scheduled (BCWS)

A variable that indicates how much of the budget should have been spent, in view of the baseline cost of the task, assignment, or resource.
