The Sun One Studio 4, Community Edition, also known as Forte, is a very nice Java Integrated Development Environment. It competes, feature-wise, with products such as Visual Café and JBuilder, but with one important difference; the price. The edition of Forte that we will cover in this chapter, called the Community Edition, is available for free from http://wwws.sun.com/software/download/. Forte is a complete environment for developing Java applications. It features editors for Java source code, Java ServerPages, tag libraries, XML, and J2EE deployment descriptors. In addition, Forte contains a monitor to view HTTP messages that are sent and received by your application. It also features a source code debugger that performs the full range of stepping, breaking, and watching that programmers have come to expect from development tools. Forte is useful for developing both standalone applications and Web-based applications with JSPs and servlets. In this chapter, you will learn how to obtain and install the Forte software on your computer. You will learn how to use Forte to develop and debug Java programs. Finally, you will learn how to create and debug Web-based applications using Forte. |
