Accessing Your GroupWise Mailbox from a Pocket PC Device

GroupWise wireless requires a Windows CE or Pocket PC device that supports IE version 4.0 or better. To determine the version of IE that comes with a Windows CE device, go to the Control Panel and the System icons.

To access the GroupWise WebAccess system from a handheld device running the Pocket PC or Windows CE OS, you must first have some way to get online with the device. You have a couple of options for getting online with your Pocket PC device. You can use a modem with the Pocket PC device and dial a traditional ISP to get Internet access. You can also use a wireless LAN card with the Pocket PC device, which places you on a corporate network, if this service is available to you. Many wireless phone providers also offer a card that allows you to access the Internet through their network. Check with your wireless phone provider to determine which solutions they offer in this arena.

After you are online and have access to the web server where the GroupWise WebAccess application is running, you can enter the URL of your WebAccess server, for example, http://groupwise.wwwidgets.com/gw/webacc.

The Pocket PC device should tell the web server that it is a Windows CE user agent, and the WebAccess application will use the simple templates to display the mail. Figure 24.4 shows an example of what the simple interface looks like on a Pocket PC/Windows CE device.

Notice from Figure 24.4 that you do not get all the graphics that the traditional GroupWise WebAccess view gives you. You will also notice that the simple templates are designed to fit on a much smaller screen. This is very helpful when you're using a Pocket PC device because it eliminates much of the scrolling across the screen to view the entire contents of the mailbox.

If you need to test whether the simple templates are working, but you do not have a simple HTML device, you can tell the WebAccess application which templates you want to use via the URL line. Here is an example of how to specifically tell the WebAccess application that you want to use the simple templates:

http://yourwebserverver DNS name/gw/webacc?User.interface=simple

Note

The "User.interface=simple" code is case sensitive.

When you press Enter, the WebAccess application displays the login page using the simple templates. When you log in, the screen looks as shown in Figure 24.5.
