Save Images

After editing an image in Photoshop, your next step is to save the file. You can save an image to most of the currently available image file formats. If you’re going to edit the image at a future date, you can save the image in Photoshop’s native PSD format to preserve the layers. You can also save the image in another format that supports layers for editing in another “layer friendly” image editing application.

Use the Save As Command

After editing a file in Photoshop, you may want to save the file using a different image format. If you’re a digital photographer and you edit RAW images in Photoshop, this will almost always be the case. You can save an edited image using any of the popular image file formats (found in the Format drop-down list) for print or monitor display.

  1. Select File | Save As to open the Save As dialog box.

  2. Enter the desired file name.

  3. Open the Format drop-down list, and select a format.

  4. Click Save. Depending on the image format, an additional dialog box appears enabling you to specify file format options for the document you are saving.

  5. If necessary, click OK to exit the selected format’s options dialog box, and save the file.

    Note

A detailed discussion of each file format is beyond the scope of this book. For in-depth information on each file format, press F1 to summon Photoshop’s online help.

Save a Layered File

If you add layers when editing an image, you can preserve the layers when you save the file. You can save a layered file in any format that supports layers. However, if you’re going to edit the document exclusively in Photoshop, save the layered file using Photoshop’s native PSD file format.

  1. Select File | Save As to open the Save As dialog box.

  2. Enter a file name for the document.

  3. Click the Format drop-down box, and select one of the options shown here. To preserve layers, save the file in one of the following formats: Photoshop (*PSD, PDD), Photoshop PDF (PDF, PDP), and TIFF (*TIFF, *TIF). Note that the second format is Adobe’s PDF (Portable Document Format).

  4. Under Save Options, select Save As A Copy to save a copy of the original document.

  5. Click Save to save the document with layers intact.

Add File Information and Metadata

When you save an image you’ve edited in Photoshop, you can add information to the file that can be read by other Photoshop users. In addition, some of the information you enter as metadata can be viewed by users who access the image’s properties dialog box after selecting the file outside of Photoshop.

  1. Open the desired image.

  2. Select File | File Info to open the file information dialog box shown here.

  3. Under Description, type a title for the document, the author’s name, a description of the image, and keywords.

  4. Click OK to add the metadata to the document.

    Note

If you save the document as a Photoshop PSD file, the metadata appears in different tabs when users view the document properties. This illustration shows the Properties dialog box (as viewed with the Window XP operating system) for a PSD file.

    Note

If you add annotations, spot colors, or an alpha channel to your document, these options will be available as save options as well. Click the applicable check box to save the document with the desired option.

Create a Digital Copyright

When you create a digital copyright, it appears in the Summary dialog box when the images properties are accessed. Other Photoshop users can also view your digital copyright by selecting File | File Info.

  1. Open the image you want to copyright.

  2. Click File | File Info to open the file information dialog box.

  3. Under Description, enter the desired metadata as outlined in the previous section.

  4. Open the Copyright Status drop-down list, and select Copyrighted.

  5. In the Copyright Notice text box, type the desired information—for example: Copyright 2004, Doug Sahlin, All rights reserved.

  6. In the Copyright Info URL text box, type the URL to the copyright owner’s Web site. After entering this information, the Go To URL button becomes active. Other Photoshop users can click this button to view the URL while they are online.

  7. Click OK to apply the digital copyright.

    Tip

Keywords can be used to search for a document. Open the Photoshop File Browser, click the Keywords tab, and then click the triangle icon in the upper-right corner of the Keywords tab. Select Search from the drop-down menu, and then enter the desired keyword in the dialog box.

Save Document Metadata as a Template

If you frequently use the same metadata, you can save it as a template. After saving metadata as a template, it appears on a list in the file information dialog box.

  1. Open a document.

  2. Click File | File Info.

  3. Type the information you want to save as a Metadata template.

  4. Click the triangle icon in the upper-right corner of the dialog box, and click Save Metadata Template to open the Save Metadata dialog box.

  5. Type a name for the metadata template, and then click OK.

Create a PDF Presentation

You can quickly create a PDF presentation using one of the Automate commands. The PDF Presentation command enables you to add transitions between slides and to specify which images are used to create the PDF document. A PDF presentation is viewed in Full-screen mode without the Acrobat interface.

  1. Open the desired files.

  2. Click File | Automate | PDF Presentation to display the PDF Presentation dialog box.

  3. Click Add Open Files to include all open files in the PDF.

  4. Click Presentation in the Output Options section.

  5. Click the View PDF After Saving check box to display the PDF document in Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader after it is saved.

  6. Accept the default advance options, which will automatically advance the presentation to the next page after five seconds. If you deselect the Advance option, viewers of the PDF document need to press page down or the down arrow key to advance to the next page of the presentation.

  7. Click the Loop After Last Page check box to loop the PDF presentation back to the first page after the last page is displayed.

  8. Open the Transition drop-down list, and select a transition option.

  9. Click Save to open the Save dialog box.

  10. Click Save to open the PDF Options dialog box.

  11. Under Encoding, click Zip or JPEG. Zip is lossless compression, which means no color data is lost when images are compressed. If you select JPEG, specify the image quality by dragging the Quality slider or by entering a value from 1 to 12 in the Quality text box. Higher values apply less compression to the image, ensuring higher quality at the expense of a larger file size.

  12. Click the Save Transparency check box to preserve transparency when the file is opened in Adobe Acrobat. This check box is disabled if no transparency exists in the images used to create the PDF presentation.

  13. Click the Image Interpolation check box to anti-alias low resolution images.

  14. Click Downgrade Color Profile to downgrade the ICC color profile from PDF version 4 to PDF version 2.

  15. Click the PDF Security check box to enable the Security Settings button. Click the button to open the PDF Security dialog box, which enables you to password protect the document, select the version of Acrobat security you are applying to the PDF file, and set viewer permissions for printing, copying, or changing the document.

  16. After setting security options, click OK to exit the PDF Security dialog box and add security to the document.

  17. Click the Include Vector data check box to optimize any vector graphics in the document. If you select this option, you can embed fonts with the document, which will enable viewers who do not have installed on their system the fonts you’ve used in the document to view the document by using the fonts embedded with the document. Alternatively, you can select Use Outlines For Text to convert the text into noneditable vector graphics.

  18. Click OK to save the presentation as a PDF file.

    Tip

Click the other section titles to view other file information, such as the digital camera information, the EXIF data (data created by a digital camera such as camera model, exposure setting, etc.), and so on. You can also enter metadata, such as the date the image was created and the creator, in the Origin section.

    Tip

If desired, click Browse to display the Open dialog box. Navigate to any additional image files you want to include in the PDF presentation.

    Note

You can also create a multipage PDF document by clicking the Multi-Page Document button in the Output Options section.
