More about File Directory Ownership

More about File & Directory Ownership

Normally when you create a new file, you are given ownership of that file and it is assigned to your default group. Your default group is assigned to you by Mac OS X when you are given your user account by the system administrator. You can belong to multiple groups. Unless the system administrator specifically assigns you to a different group, in Mac OS X, the default group is a unique group with the same name as your short name and with you as the sole member.

Tip

  • The admin user can use the chown and chgrp commands to change the ownership of a file or directory. You can learn more about these commands by viewing their man pages. In the Terminal window, type man chown or man chgrp and press to view the command's man pages.
