Moving Around Your File

You may move around your file by using your 4 arrow keys, PrevScreen, NextScreen, or SECT (KP-8). Your arrow keys move the cursor one character at a time in the direction you indicate. PrevScreen and NextScreen move 16 lines in the direction indicated and move the cursor to the first column. SECT moves the cursor 16 lines in the current direction. The current direction is set to forward by pressing ADVANCE (KP-4) or backward by pressing BACKUP (KP-5).

You may move to the beginning of the file by pressing TOP (PF1,KP-5). You may move to the end of the file by pressing BOTTOM (PF1,KP-4).

You may move one word at a time using WORD (KP-1). This moves the cursor one word in the current direction.

You may move to the next page by using PAGE (KP-7). This actually means moving to the next form-feed character in the current direction and so may not be useful for some files.

To move by large amounts, line-mode commands may be more efficient. You may move to a certain line number within the file by entering the line number and pressing ENTER. To move to line number 10, enter "10" at the line-mode prompt.

To move by a given number of lines, you may indicate a direction and amount by using the "+" or "-" sign followed by the number of lines you'd like to move. To move 1,000 lines up in the file, enter "-1000" at the line mode prompt.

Note

In the course of editing the file, line numbers may be deleted or extra line numbers added between existing numbers as you add, remove, and move text. To reset the line numbers, use RESEQUENCE at the line mode prompt.
