Chapter 1 is a brief introduction to intranets, and some of the issues we will be considering in the book.

In Chapter 2 we take a look at justifying the intranet to your organization through calculating Return on Investment, and how this not only justifies the project, but points out the functionality that will be most valuable in your organization.

Chapter 3 is the first part of our intranet roadmap, and discusses where to start the process. We'll cover stakeholder interviews and how you can benefit from them.

In Chapter 4 we'll look at the issue of browser base, and how an intranet gives you the bonus of knowing what browsers are viewing your content. We'll also discuss the issue of web standards, and their place in intranet development.

Chapter 5 delves further into development techniques, looking at how to manage the intranet project and the solutions that may suit your organization.

Chapter 6 is an overview of usability and information architecture in an intranet context, with tips on how to create the most usable interface for your intranet.

Chapter 7 is about controlling content, and how to avoid the common pitfalls of delivering information via an intranet.

In Chapter 8 we look at Content Management Systems, and how they can be a benefit to any intranet. We'll also look at how to decide on a CMS, and the options available.

Chapter 9 is about taking the intranet further as a communications platform, how forums and other forms of online tools can enhance communication within your organization.

Security and Personalization is the subject for Chapter 10, where we'll give you an overview of the problems you'll face in securing your intranet. We'll also discuss how proper security can lead to a personalized experience for intranet users.

In Chapter 11 we'll look at the issue of marketing an intranet once you have it, and how to make sure that employees know of the intranet's existence and keep coming back.

Chapter 12 is about the problems you may face when an intranet gets too big, and how restructuring may solve those problems.

Remote Users are the focus of Chapter 13, where we'll look at allowing employees to access an intranet from an external location.

Chapter 14 is about expanding your intranet to your clients and business partners, so that it becomes an extranet.
