This chapter described how to use Honeyd scripts to mimic application and network services. Honeyd comes with more than a dozen default scripts. Scripts can be made in nearly any programming language, including Perl, shell, Python, and any other language your computer platform is able to host and execute. This chapter concludes our discussion of Honeyd.
Even though Honeyd is the most popular honeypot software, it takes a fair amount of effort to get it up and running, especially if customized scripts are involved. Many readers may have found this chapter and its lessons too much work for the simple honeypot they want to deploy.
Chapter 8 covers other Windows-based honeypots for people looking for an easier, albeit sometimes less functional, honeypot.
