Summary

The major components of a site definition are its list definitions. A list definition specifies a list's fields, views, forms, toolbars, and other specifics. SCHEMA.XML is central to each list definition.

SCHEMA.XML contains the CAML code that defines the list. Furthermore, every ASPX or HTM page used by the list definition must be referenced in SCHEMA.XML. It is the conductor, so to speak, of the list definition.

The major elements of SCHEMA.XML are List, Fields, Views, and Forms. List is the top-level element within SCHEMA.XML. Fields, Views, and Forms are all children of List. Fields specifies the various columns (name and type) for a list. Views specifies the various ways the list data is presented to the user. Forms specifies how data is captured from the user for entry into the list.
