Apply Formatting Using a Style


You can quickly apply formatting and maintain formatting consistency by using styles to format text. Styles are predefined sets of formatting that can include font, paragraph, list, and border and shading information.

  1. Select the text to which you want to apply formatting.

  2. Click the Styles and Formatting icon (image from book).

    Word displays the Styles and Formatting task pane.

    image from book You can point at a formatting choice to display the details of the formatting.

  3. Based on the sample’s appearance, click the style you want to apply to the selection.

  4. Click anywhere outside the selection to continue working.

Is there an easy way to see, at a glance, the style assigned to each line or paragraph of my document?

  1. Click the Normal view icon (image from book) to switch to Normal view.

  2. Click Tools.

  3. Click Options.

  4. On the View tab, click here and select a value of at least .5”.

  5. Click OK.
