If you've ever wanted transparent text or shapes without going through the hassle of converting them to a symbol first, then you're not alone. Transparency is a fun setting to play with, and it's very easy to do so. When choosing a color (stroke or fill), instead of using the options in the Toolbar or the Property inspector, look at the Color Mixer panel (SHIFT-F9). Turn any color transparent by choosing the color and setting the value in the Alpha field to something below 100%. The lower the value, the more transparent your color will be. You're even given a little grid underlay so you can preview how transparent the color will be. Now just apply the color as you normally would and bam! Instant transparency without converting to a symbol.
