Industrial structure further adjusted and the share of the service industry on the rise


There were 907,000 individual industrial and commercial proprietors in primary industry, with a total registered capital of 12.97 billion renminbi, employing 1.94 million people. In secondary, or manufacturing, industry, the number of individual industrial and commercial proprietors was 2.852 million, with a total registered capital of 63.78 billion renminbi, employing 20.57 million people. The number of individual industrial and commercial proprietors in the tertiary, or service, industry was 20.571 million, having a total registered capital of 266.83 billion renminbi and employing 37.60 million. Their shares against the national total number of individual industrial and commercial proprietors, total employment and registered capital were 84.6 per cent, 79 per cent and 77.7 per cent respectively. It should be noted, however, that most of the indicators for individual industrial and commercial proprietors in the primary and secondary industries have been on the decline, while the indicators for those in the tertiary industry have been rising .

Those privately-run enterprises in the secondary and tertiary industries have enjoyed higher rates of growth, while those in the primary industry have decreased. In 2001, the number of privately-run enterprises in primary industry dropped by 5.8 per cent and there was a decrease of 6.7 per cent or 522,000 in the number of people employed. The registered capital of privately- run enterprises in primary industry had increased by 21.2 per cent to 33.32 billion renminbi. In secondary industry, privately-run enterprises increased by a total of 767,000, a rise of 10.4 per cent over 2000. Total employment was 14.03 million, 9.5 per cent more than in 2000. Total registered capital had also seen an increase of 34.1 per cent to 654.47 billion renminbi. Privately- run enterprises in the service industry have developed very rapidly in 2001, increasing in number by 19.1 per cent to 1.224 million, in the provision of jobs by 17.7 per cent to 12.59 million and in registered capital by 39.1 per cent to 1.134 trillion renminbi. The ratio for privately-run enterprises among primary, secondary and tertiary industries is 2:38:60.
