Reasons for Exporting Data

 <  Day Day Up  >

Users need to get data out of FileMaker Pro for a lot of reasons. They range from using data in slide presentations to charting numbers in a spreadsheet to sending data to another database system. This chapter covers the various techniques that can be employed to move data out of FileMaker Pro. Exporting data is the most commonly used technique, but there are others. Instant Web publishing and custom Web publishing using XML are two other popular methods . Those two topics are so broad that they each warranted their own chapters and aren't covered in this chapter.

For more on instant Web publishing, see Chapter 21, "Instant Web Publishing," p. 605 .

For more information on custom Web publishing using XML, see Chapter 23, "Custom Web Publishing," p. 671 .

This chapter also covers the use of ODBC for moving data out of FileMaker systems. First, though, we cover all the different ways that data can be exported from FileMaker Pro.

CAUTION

A quick word about security: When data is moved out of FileMaker Pro by means of an export or some other method, it is not secure. Many people go to a lot of trouble securing their database systems, but then they leave data that is exported from the system unprotected . If you need to export sensitive data from a secure system, at least take the trouble to compress and password protect the exported data with a ZIP or SIT utility.
