TIP 218: Uploading Files

You can drag and drop files between the Files and Publish Server tabs of the Site window to upload and download files, but this process is prone to error. Instead, let GoLive keep track of the files you need to upload. There are three upload commands you need to learn (Figure 218a):

  • Upload All: You'll use this command the first time you upload a site because it uploads all the local files in your site to the Web server.

  • Upload Selection: This uploads all selected files in the Files tab of the Site window to their correct location on the Web server. It's even smart enough to correctly upload multiple files that are selected in different folders, even multiple nested folders, to the appropriate locations on the Web server.

  • Upload Modified Files: Uploads only the files on your hard drive that are newer than the ones on the server. A dialog lets you confirm exactly which files are uploaded before the process begins.

Use the Upload button on the toolbar to easily begin the process of transferring files to the Web server. The button can be used two ways. Click and hold the button to access and select from the same list of commands defined above. A single click on the button defaults to the behavior enabled in the Change Button To submenu. If set on "Upload Modified…" Command, a single click will begin uploading the modified files (Figure 218b).

Come On Down!

The toolbar button directly to the right of Upload is Download. Just as you can transfer files to a Web server, you can also download files from the server. The Download button's behavior mirrors that of the Upload button. Click and hold to access a list of commands, or click once to begin the download process as set in the Change Button To submenu.
