Selecting a Template or Wizard

When you click the New Blank Document button in the Standard toolbar to start a new document, Word assumes that you want to base the document on the Normal template. If you want to use a different template or wizard, you have to use the File, New command.

Follow these steps to start a document based on a template or wizard other than the Normal template:

  1. Choose File, New to display the New dialog box (see Figure 4.4).

  2. Click the tab that contains the template or wizard that you want to use.

  3. Click the icon for the template or wizard, and check the Preview area on the right side of the dialog box. If you see the message "Template not installed yet. Click OK to install it now." dig out your Office or Word CD and insert it into your CD-ROM drive. (As soon as you click OK, Word will copy the necessary files from the CD to your hard drive.)

  4. If the template is already installed, you'll see a picture of it in the Preview area of the New dialog box. The Preview area enables you to see what your finished document might look like.

  5. Click OK (or double-click the template or wizard).

In a moment, you'll see a new document based on the template or wizard. You need to complete the document by adding your personalized text.
