About the CD

Overview

This CD-ROM contains the installation, reference, and packet capture files that are used in various chapters of this book. The files for each chapter are located in the directory from which they are referenced in the book.

Chapter 3 contains the Ethereal 0.10.0 installation files for Windows, Red Hat Linux 9.0, Solaris 9, and the Ethereal source code. All files are provided in uncompressed .tar, .exe, .rpm, or Solaris package format. This chapter also includes prerequisite and supporting programs for the Ethereal installation. These directories are: adns, ethereal, gtk+_glib, gzip, pcap, pcre, perl, snmp, and zlib. Newer versions of Ethereal may have been released since the creation of the CD-ROM, so please check the Ethereal website at www.ethereal.com.

Chapter 5 contains an extensive Ethereal display filter reference. It is located in the /filters directory.

Chapters 4 and 8 contain several packet capture examples. These are located in the /captures directory. The packet captures range from large network scans to trojan backdoor activity. Some of these packet captures were obtained from the Honeynet Project while others were lab generated. Taking time to analyze these packet captures will give you valuable hands-on experience with Ethereal and its features.
