In this chapter, you learned how to extend the many different controls that we have covered in order to add additional functionality to them, as well as how to build your own completely customized controls. In fact, even with all the material covered in this chapter, it is only scratching the surface of what can be done with custom controls. With custom controls, you have a huge amount of control over how your application works. Further, the ease of installation of these controls (compared to COM objects) coupled with their power is sure to create a large market for third-party controls once ASP.NET is released. In many cases this will allow you to buy the functionality you need off-the-shelf, rather than build it yourself. Finally, this chapter briefly covered custom components, which are a key part of most significant applications. Components are covered in more detail in Chapter 14, as part of the IBuySpy architecture.
