About This Chapter

This chapter introduces you to SQL Server 2000 by describing the components of SQL Server and explaining how those components work together to provide a relational database management system (RDBMS). Many of the topics discussed in this chapter will be described in greater detail in later chapters. The purpose of this chapter, however, is to give you a cohesive overview of SQL Server so that you can understand how all the pieces fit together.

Before You Begin

There are no special requirements necessary to complete the lessons in this chapter, although a working knowledge of the previous versions of SQL Server would be helpful.
