The Standards Landscape

Many groups, including the International Standards Organization (ISO), the OpenGIS Consortium, WAP Forum, Location Interoperability Forum (LIF), OpenLS, OASIS, and others have worked on various pieces of LBMS delivery standardization. The field is too new for de facto standards to be available, so there has been a lot of confusion. In the last year or two, the rise of XML and SOAP encoding as an XML-based over-the-wire format has achieved critical mass in technical mindshare. Microsoft s .NET framework is a direct expression of this convergence on a single network service model.
