Performance Management Tools

The following sections describe the IBM IMS performance management tools.

IBM IMS Buffer Pool Analyzer for z/OS, V1

The IMS Buffer Pool Analyzer for z/OS tool:

  • Provides modeling facilities to assist with making informed decisions about the addition of buffers to an existing pool, or sizing requirements for a new buffer pool.

  • Helps you determine the impact of buffer pool changes before they are made to take the guesswork out of the process.

  • Analyzes IMS database buffer pools (OSAM and VSAM) to provide statistical analysis of the impact of changes that affect the buffer pools.

  • Provides I/O rates and buffering requirements for a specific database.

  • Allows for better allocation of real memory resources.

  • Identifies databases that most heavily use each database subpool.

  • Performs "what if" scenario analysis, such as identifying the impact of splitting a specific database into a new buffer pool.

  • Determines the performance effects for a given buffer pool when you add or reduce the number of buffer pools.

IBM IMS Network Compression Facility for z/OS, V1

The IMS Network Compression Facility for z/OS:

  • Replaces the IMS Data Stream Tuner; provides support for IMS Version 6, IMS Version 7, and IMS Version 8; and adds several new features and functionality improvements.

  • Provides several new options for compression of 3270 data streams:

    - Compresses all repeated characters, not just spaces, nulls, asterisks, and dashes

    - Allows 3270 Field Merge, blank elimination, and elimination of non-display fields

    - Eliminates redundant 3270 Set Buffer Address (SBA) commands

  • Makes installation easier by eliminating the need for the XCM address space and subsystem, and for SYS1.PARMLIB updates, except APF authorization of one data set.

  • Includes a utility to convert current options to the new PROCLIB member format.

  • Improves flexibility by allowing cross-MVS system inquiries and updates to Network Compression Facility information and options.

IBM IMS Performance Analyzer for z/OS, V3.3

The IBM IMS Performance Analyzer for z/OS tool:

  • Provides comprehensive reporting for the IMS log and IMS Monitor, and for IMS Connect Extensions for z/OS event collection.

  • Contains a New Dashboard report that provides a quick overview of critical system performance indicators.

  • Includes a new BMP Checkpoint report that measures batch checkpoint frequency that can impact online performance and system restartability.

  • Generates the Transaction History File that collects detailed transaction performance data and exports it into DB2.

  • Provides additional information to aid in the interpretation of reports.

  • Provides a wide variety of reports that can help shorten transaction response times and increase resource availability.

  • Offers automatic DBRC log selection of the required SLDS log files to simplify report requests.

  • Produces IMS log and Monitor reports to "health check" your system.

  • Enhanced DBCTL reporting.

  • Provides log reports: Transaction Statistics, System Checkpoint, and Deadlock.

  • Provides ISPF dialog interface enhancements to manage IMS system and sysplex definitions, and tailor and submit report requests.

  • Comprehensive reporting for the Fast Path Monitor, including DEDB, BALG/EMH, Fast Path Buffer, OTHREAD, and VSO.

  • Complements IMS Problem Investigator for z/OS (5655-K50) in the investigation of IMS performance-related problems.

Program number: 5655-E15

IBM IMS Performance Monitor for z/OS, V1

The IBM IMS Performance Monitor for z/OS:

  • Provides real-time status monitoring and alerts for an active IMS subsystem.

  • Detects active IMS subsystems when they are started and any IMS subsystems that may subsequently become active.

  • Allows multiple IMS subsystems to be viewed from a single monitoring station, and these subsystems can be logically grouped as desired (for example, in data-sharing groups and shared-queues groups).

  • Reports as much information as possible to help isolate or point to problem areas that include sysplex functions.

  • Features general IMS information such as release levels, configurations, and system startup parameters.

  • Allows user-specified thresholds for setting alerts.

  • Provides current IMS resource information to assist in tuning.

Program number: 5655-G50

IMS Problem Investigator for z/OS, V1

The IMS Problem Investigator for z/OS tool:

  • Provides an enhanced level of problem-determination services for IMS TM and IMS DB systems.

  • Includes navigation aids, formatted and personalized reporting, and investigative procedures for IMS log, trace, and other data.

  • Offers powerful automated features to help reduce the amount of time required to identify and analyze defects or other events of interest in the IMS log.

  • Accesses services by an ISPF dialog or a batch reporting utility.
