query
A database object that locates information so that the information can be viewed , changed, or analyzed in various ways. The results of a query can be used as the basis for forms, reports , and data access pages. In Word, a set of selection criteria that indicate how to filter recipients in a mail merge.

range
A block of cells in a worksheet or datasheet.
readability statistics
Information about the reading level of a document determined by the average number of syllables per word and words per sentence in relation to various U.S. reading scales .
Reading Layout view
In Word, a view that shows a document as it will appear on a handheld reading device.
Reading Pane
In Outlook, a pane in which you can view a message without opening it.
read-only
The designation of a file that can be opened and viewed but not modified.
record selector
The gray bar along the left edge of a table or form.
record source
The place from which information derives between two bound objects, such as a field that pulls information from a table. See also control source .
records
All the items of information (fields) that pertain to one particular entity, such as a customer, employee, or project. See also field .
recurring
Describes items that occur repeatedly. For example, an appointment or task that occurs on a regular basis, such as a weekly status meeting or a monthly haircut, can be designated as recurring.
reference mark
A number or character in the main text of a document that indicates additional information is included in a footnote or endnote.
referential integrity
The system of rules Access uses to ensure that relationships between tables are valid and that data cannot be changed in one table without also being changed in all related tables.
relational database
A sophisticated type of database in which data is organized in multiple related tables. Data can be pulled from the tables just as if they were stored in a single table.
relationship
An association between common fields in two tables.
relative path
A designation of the location of a file in relation to the current working directory. See also absolute path .
relative reference
A cell reference in a formula, such as =B3, that refers to a cell that is a specific distance away from the cell that contains the formula. For example, if the formula =B3 were in cell C3, copying the formula to cell C4 would cause the formula to change to =B4.
relatively
The designation of a picture whose position is determined by its relation to another element of a document, such as a margin, page, column, or character. See also absolutely .
reminder
A message that appears at a specified interval before an appointment, meeting, or task, announcing when the activity is set to occur. Reminders appear any time Outlook is running, even if it isn t your active program.
Remote Web Site view
A view of information about the published version of your Web site that you use to see the local and remote file structures simultaneously . You can manipulate local and remote files and folders from this view.
replica
A copy of the Design Master of a database.
replicating
The process of creating a Design Master so that multiple copies of a database can be sent to multiple locations for editing. The copies can then be synchronized with the Design Master so that it reflects all the changes.
report
A database object used to display a table or tables in a formatted, easily accessible manner, either on the screen or on paper.
Reports view
The FrontPage view that displays the available reports about the open Web site.
Research service
A feature that enables you to access the reference material included in Word, materials you add to the service, and Internet resources.
revision marks
Underlines, strike-through marks, and colored text that distinguishes revised text from original text.
RGB (Red, Green, and Blue) values
The visible spectrum represented by mixing red, green, and blue colors.
rich media
The combined use of motion and sound in media.
Rich Text Format (RTF)
A common text format that many programs can open.

role
A named set of permissions to which specific users can be assigned.
root Web
A Web site that contains a subweb.
rotating handle
A small green handle around a shape used to adjust the angle of rotation of the shape.
row
A horizontal line of cells in a spreadsheet or table.
row headings
The gray buttons (1, 2, 3, etc.) along the left side of a datasheet. See also column headings .
row selector
The gray box at the left end of a row in a table that, when clicked, selects all the cells in the row.
rules
A set of conditions, actions, and exceptions that process and organize messages.
run-in index
An index that lists subentries on the same line as the main entries in an index.
running a query
The process of telling Access to search the specified table or tables for records that match the criteria you have specified in the query and to display the designated fields from those records in a datasheet (table). See also criteria; query .
