I've worked with Flash for several years now, and the most important lesson I ever learned was to back up your work. You may have noticed that this book has several tips on how to do this effectively. That's because I learned the hard way over and over again. I shed a lot of tears so that you would not have to.
If you want to make changes to any symbol in your Library and want to make sure that you can revert back if things go wrong, do this....
Right-click on the symbol you want to change and choose Duplicate. Give it any name you like and make your changes to the original. Now you have a copy that you can always go back to if your changes don't work out. Another advantage is that you don't have to save a new file to safely make minor changes to one symbol (although I do recommend doing that from time to time as well).
