New Document Options

 < Day Day Up >

New Document Options determine what happens when you first create a new document. To specify these options, select Tools | Options, then select the New Document tab, as shown in Figure 21-1. When you select File | New to create a new document, you can elect to invoke the New Report Wizard to guide you through the process of creating a document, or you can have a blank screen displayed in which you would then insert a block and create a data provider. Under Report Layout, you can choose the following:

  • Prompt User Prompts you with two options, to choose a standard report table block or to select a template that then presents more options to create a number of other report styles such as master/detail, cross/tab, or chart. If you most often use a tabular report style but occasionally use other styles, then select this option.

  • Select a Template Automatically prompts you to select a template. For beginning users, it may be overwhelming to set this option as the default as you are presented with multiple template styles.

  • Use a Default Template Allows you to set a corporate template as the default report style or to select a default other than the standard table style. To choose a template other than the default, click the drop-down box to see a list of available templates.

  • Use a Standard Report If tabular is your most frequently used report style, then select this option. You can easily change the report style after the results are retrieved, as described in Chapter 16.

The Data Access options allow you to choose different types of data providers as a default.

  • Prompt User Enables you either to choose a universe or to choose another data provider such as MOLAP, Stored Procedure, or Free-hand SQL.

  • Select a Universe Will automatically prompt you to select a universe. The option to choose other data sources is not displayed.

  • Use the Default Universe If you most often will work with one universe, then set this option and use the drop-down box to specify the default universe.

  • Use a Different Data Provider If you most often do not access data through the universe, set this option and click the drop-down box to specify a different data source. For example, if you most often work with Stored Procedures or Personal Data Files, check this option and then click the drop-down box to specify the default type of data provider.
