Access as a Platform for Web Development

Under the right circumstances, Access can support a website, the biggest obstacle being traffic. Access simply can't handle heavy traffic. If you have an existing application in Access that you want to upgrade to the web, go ahead and try it out. A working application that gets the job done will probably continue to do so on the web.

If you're going to create the database, but you're stuck with Access, just keep the concurrent user issue in mind. Close all connections as soon as possible, and you'll find that Access handles more traffic than you expect.

On the other hand, if financial and support personnel resources are available, and you can choose the database system, don't choose Access. Don't even consider Access for a heavy-duty e-commerce site that's destined for heavy traffic.
