Chapter 11. Communicating Wirelessly with Bluetooth

If you've ever heard the term PAN and thought someone was confusing a networking acronym, this chapter might surprise you. PAN stands for personal area network, which describes a network with a much smaller "footprint" than a local area network (LAN) and is measured in feet instead of yards. The leading PAN technology is Bluetooth, which is a wireless networking standard that allows devices to communicate with each other within in a range of about 30 feet. The idea behind Bluetooth and PANs in general is to make it possible to establish a small wireless network around yourself to help eliminate wires between devices. Your Treo has full support for Bluetooth networking and can use Bluetooth to communicate with devices ranging from wireless headsets to hands-free car kits to global positioning system (GPS) receivers. And don't forget that you can use Bluetooth to wirelessly synchronize your Treo with your desktop computer. |
