Eight of the world's leading manufacturers of audio-visual consumer electronics have developed a common, openly licensable specification for networking digital home entertainment products, called the Home Audio/Video interpretability (HAVi) architecture.

iTV standards have only adopted the level 2 GUI portion of the specifications. Therefore, most of this chapter is devoted to that aspect of the specification, which includes the specification of the GUI APIs. These APIs depart from the Java AWT by introducing capabilities important in consumer electronics domains.
