Chapter 12. DBA Tasks

Chapter 12. DBA Tasks

Congratulations! In the previous chapters you have actually performed some of the traditional DBA tasks. Activities such as creating the database and various tables, developing security, creating users, and creating tablespaces are all normally seen as DBA functions. You have done them, and they work!

Let's start our discussion of DBA tasks by listing some of the major functions that a DBA performs :

  1. Installing Oracle Server

  2. Creating the database

  3. Creating users

  4. Developing the security schema

  5. Creating tables

  6. Creating roles and profiles

  7. Managing grants

  8. Installing system upgrades

  9. Enforcing Oracle licensing

  10. Starting up and shutting down the database

  11. Backing up and recovering data: import and export

  12. Creating "instances" of the database for testing and development

  13. Modifying the database and tuning the system

and any other tasks that your supervisor, or her supervisor, asks you to do! Since you've already mastered functions 1 through 7, we'll start here with 8.
