Jazzing It Up

Next, look at the top-left corner of the OOo window to select the font style and size.

18-point Times New Roman.

Select from more than 100 fonts.

Choose a size between 6 and 96 points.

To the right of where you select font sizes and styles are text-control buttons. The B button makes text bold, the I button makes it italic, and the U button underlines it.

Text format buttons.

The next group of buttons to the right controls layout rather than individual letters or words. The usual (default) style is "flush left, ragged right," which is how I typed in Terri's original flyer text.

Alignment buttons.

Then I centered the text and made the headline bold and changed it to a larger font size.

Centered text with a larger headline.

Here's justified text from another chapter in this book. The spaces between words are automatically adjusted to make all the lines exactly the same length.

Justified text.

The text in this book is justified, as is the text in most newspapers and magazines. Because early Web browsers didn't do a good job of handling the proportional spacing that justification requires, most material published on the Internet is "ragged right" instead of justified. You may want to consider where and how something you write will be published before you select a text-alignment style (although your choice can be changed with a few clicks after you finish writing).
