C.6. Browser Bugs

CSS is the best way to format Web pages, and Internet Explorer 6 for Windows is the world's most popular browser so why doesn't IE 6 do a better job displaying CSS? That's a question for the ages, but one thing's for sure: You'd be holding a thinner book if it didn't have to devote so much paper to IE workarounds. (And the following Web sites would go out of business.)

C.6.1. Windows Internet Explorer

  • How to Attack an Internet Explorer (Win) Display Bug: www.communitymx.com/content/article.cfm?page=1&cid=C37E0. A great introduction to debugging Internet Explorer CSS problems.

  • RichInStyle's guide to IE 5/5.5 Bugs: www.richinstyle.com/bugs/ie5.html. That pesky browser is still around, and still causing Web designers trouble. If you need help making your pages work for IE 5, check this page out.

  • Explorer Exposed ! www.positioniseverything.net/explorer.html. Information on the most common Internet Explorer bugs and how to fix them.

C.6.2. Mac Internet Explorer 5

  • Mac IE 5: Problems with CSS Rendering: www.l-c-n.com/IE5tests. This book doesn't cover Internet Explorer 5 for the Mac, since it's just about a dead browser. Microsoft is no longer updating it or even providing technical support, giving Mac fans a perfect excuse to switch to the superior Safari and Firefox browsers. However, if you still need to accommodate IE 5 for the Mac, check out this site for helpful tips on Mac IE-only CSS bugs.
