There is no reason to buy a computing platform if there's no software to support it; being able to find software for your Tablet PC that helps you do your job more effectively is of critical importance. Because the Tablet PC is such a new platform, however, there is not yet available a plethora of Tablet PC specific software. That said, there are numerous applications available for use on a Tablet PC, some of which are beginning to make the Tablet PC an indispensable tool for certain functions. Many of these applications can be also be used on a regular computer, without much sacrifice in capability.

I have included in this chapter a list of free and commercial general-purpose software that can help you perform various functions on your Tablet PC. (For information about niche applications, such as vertical industry applications, see the table at the end of the chapter.) I've included only those applications that I feel are the best in their class. For the sake of brevity, I have described each application in a minimal fashion, and have omitted details about how each one is used. Instead, I've explained their main features, and noted each application's intended audience. For more information about a particular application, visit its manufacturer's Web site.
