While much of this book is pertinent to any Linux distribution, the primary focus is on Red Hat Linux. Within this book we examine many of the programs/packages that come with Red Hat 9.0. Obviously, we don’t cover all of them. Some readers might find it useful to have a complete list of the packages that are on the Red Hat 9.0 CD-ROM for you to install. Frankly, this list is huge. There are large numbers of programs available on the CD for you to install. Some are very important major applications, and some are small utilities. It is likely that at least some of the items in this list will not be applications you need. It is even possible that some will be applications you won’t even quite understand. However, if you are curious as to what comes with Red Hat 9.0, this list is complete.
Many items in this list are source code or extensions for various applications. While many readers of this book may not be professional programmers, you should be aware that one of the hallmarks of open source software is the fact that you get the source code as well. You can then, if you so desire, alter and recompile the program to suit your needs. For example, anything with C++ in its name is probably for programmers using the C++ programming language. Also, if you see the words Python or Perl, these refer to programming languages as well.
