Editing Data Entries

After you type an entry and press Enter, Excel accepts the entry and places it in the cell. To replace the entry with a different entry, simply click the cell , type the new entry, and press Enter or Tab . Or, rather than replace the entry, you can edit it, either inside the cell or in the formula bar. To edit an entry, follow these steps:

  1. Double-click the cell that contains the entry you want to edit, or click the cell and press the F2 key. Doing so places an insertion point inside the cell and inside the formula bar, indicating you can now edit the entry. Edit appears in the status bar.

  2. Use the arrow keys to move the insertion point to the area of the entry you want to change, or click there with the mouse.

  3. To delete characters to the right of the insertion point, press the Delete key. To delete characters to the left of the insertion point, press Backspace . (Or drag over the characters you want to delete and press the Delete key.)

  4. To insert characters, move the insertion point to the place where you want the characters inserted and type the characters.

  5. To accept the new entry, press the Enter key or click the Enter button in the formula bar. To reject the new entry and return to the previous entry, press the Esc key or click the Cancel button.
