Chapter6.Working with Files in the Shell

Chapter 6. Working with Files in the Shell

What You'll Learn in This Chapter:

  • How to access the Linux shell (command line) in Fedora Core 4

  • How to structure commands given to the shell

  • How to use the ls command to list files

  • How to use the touch command to create empty files

  • How to use the cd command to change your current working directory

  • How to use the cp and mv commands to copy and move files

  • How to use the mkdir command to make directories

  • How to use the rm and rmdir commands to remove files and directories

This chapter introduces you to one of the environments you'll need to master in order to be a fluent user of Linux and other Unix-like systems. At this point, you have installed Linux successfully, have logged in to your desktop, and have learned to perform some basic desktop and file tasks; now it's time to begin to use the more powerful environment for which Linux and Unix are famous.

Take It Slow and Easy

Don't feel as though you need to become comfortable with the Linux command line all at once. Use this chapter and the next one to familiarize yourself with the Linux command line, but don't try to memorize everything you read. Just read through the text and try your hand at some of the commands for now. The details will become clearer as you progress through future chapters, especially the chapters in Part IV, "Using the Linux Command Line," and you'll find what you read in this chapter becoming more and more valuable as you progress through all the remaining content of this book.
