This chapter introduces Java on the server. We have seen already in Chapter 10 how to integrate ColdFusion and Java with CFX custom tags, applets, and so forth. That chapter, however, had its distinct focus on ColdFusion elements. Moreover, much of the functionality covered in that chapter was possible already with ColdFusion 5.
This chapter puts the focus squarely on Java. After comparing ColdFusion and Java server-side technology, we will cover everything you need to set up a Java Web site, including setting up a servlet container and database server. We will also cover servlets and how to use new CFML functions and capabilities to integrate variables and functionality between your JavaServer Pages (covered in the next chapter) and ColdFusion MX templates.
We will also put together a complete servlet application that interacts with a JSP to password-protect pages.
Note that this chapter cannot offer complete coverage of servlets. This is a very big subject, and we will rely somewhat on the Java knowledge we've gained throughout the book to start putting servlets to work. JSPs will be covered in greater detail in this chapter.
