Infrastructure Software

If your web-based business is to cross the finish line of the “race for success” you must choose the right software. When making your software choices consider ease of integration, scalability, and robustness, i.e., does it work well with other software and hardware, can it scale as your business grows and as technology changes, and can it handle large amounts of traffic.

The first software decision to be made is which operating system to use for your e-commerce business. Next, choose your basic website software: web server, log analysis, and database. Specific e-commerce software is such a broad subject that it has its own chapter — Chapter 9. Then there is adjunct software, which many of you will want to consider — those are discussed in Chapter 10.

Software can be defined at its most basic as computer instructions or data — anything that can be stored electronically can be software.
