You will need to use either Windows 2000, XP, or Windows NT with Service Pack 6 to take advantage of most of the examples for this book. Some components of ASP.NET will function on Windows Me, 98, or earlier versions of Windows, but support is problematic, and trying ASP.NET with these operating systems is not recommended. A Web server is required. This can range from IIS 5 to Personal Web Server. I'll show you in the first lesson how to go about setting up the server properly. Also, you'll need to get the .NET Framework SDK from Microsoft to work the examples. Again, setup is examined in Day 1. Finally, to take advantage of the database examples, you'll need some form of OLE DB compliant database system, such as Microsoft Access or SQL Server. Without it, you won't be able to play around with the related examples. |
