Your handheld's stylus and touch-sensitive screen are the two most basic tools you use to get stuff done (and have fun) on your handheld. Take good care of them and you'll keep your handheld happy. Go to To master Graffiti® 2 writing, see chapter 4. To quickly access menus, see page 15.

Hands-on advice Even though your fingernail can work as a stylus, it eventually will scratch the screen. Use the navigator if your stylus isn't handy. |
Protect screens A small investment in a protective case can protect your screen from the scratches and nicks of everyday use. For info on cases, see page 136. |
Trapping basics Tap once to place the cursor. Tap quickly twice to highlight a word. Tap quickly three times to highlight a line. |
Protect your screen Screen protectors Screen protectors protect your handheld's screen from scratches and accidental marks. They also reduce glare and reflection, a nice benefit for use in bright daylight. You simply cut them out and apply them over the screen. Choose from a variety of styles at www.palmOne.com/store. Care and cleaning Every month or so, wipe your screen with a soft, clean cloth dampened with a diluted solution of window cleaner and water. You don't need much. Don't "shine" fingerprints off with your sleeve or pant leg, or you might scratch the surface. Change your screen protector once a month, or twice a month under heavy usage. Avoid sharp objects Never use a sharp object as a stylus, including open pens, tacks, and paper clips, and be careful of keys and coins when you're keeping your handheld in your pants pocket or purse. |
Take along an extra stylus Losing your stylus can slow you down. Get a replacement stylus to carry around, even one that fi ts on your key chain or comes with a built-in laser pointer. For details, see page 140. |
Carrying your stylus Some stylus models fit directly in your handheld's slot, but others don't. Don't try to jam a stylus in if it doesn't fi t perfectly. Instead, consider buying a case that can hold all of your accessories, such as an expansion card and extra stylus, as well credit cards and business cards. |
Homemade protection An inexpensive way to avoid scratching the writing area is to cover it with a piece of transparent tape. Some people also cut up transparency sheets to use as screen protectors. But you'll get more reliable protection by making a tiny investment in a pack of screen protectors. |
If the stylus doesn't work When you first started using your handheld, you were asked to fine-tune the screen by tapping on targets. If your taps ever seem imprecise, select Home > Prefs > Digitizer and tap the bull's-eyes. This recalibrates your handheld. |
How the screen works Your screen is a sandwich of two sheets of conductive material separated by small "spacer" balls. When you tap, the screen measures the tap on horizontal and vertical axes. Over time, weather and other factors cause slight changes to the electronics. That's why you need to recalibrate occasionally with the Digitizer. |
