Chapter 7. Diagnostics

7. Diagnostics

MANY PRODUCT TEAMS AT MICROSOFT have shifted focus in recent years. Instead of just focusing entirely on whiz-bang features like calendar controls and wizards, much of the team resources have been dedicated to shoring up important security and management features on the platform. This has resulted in many new management features in ASP.NET 2.0 (a quick look at the System.Web.Management namespace will give you an idea of the scope of the effort).

One of the biggest improvements is the new health monitoring feature in ASP.NET 2.0, which we'll explore in depth in this chapter. We'll also take a look at the advances in ASP.NET tracing, and you'll see how easy it has become to integrate ASP.NET's trace data with the existing System.Diagnostics tracing system, as well as how to programmatically access ASP.NET trace data. Plus, at the end of the chapter we'll introduce you to a powerful feature in Windows that you may never have heard of before: Event Tracing for Windows (ETW). We'll show you how to use ETW to "debug without a debugger," diagnosing problems as they occur in production servers without taking them down or attaching a debugger.
