Chapter 17. Building a Web Service

I l @ ve RuBoard

Web services are among the hottest topics in the software industry because they promise interoperability between heterogeneous systems through a commonly accepted set of standards that govern the layout and transportation of data. Web services also provide the foundation for the Global XML Web Services Architecture (GXA), which was discussed briefly at the end of Chapter 13. This chapter will describe the Web services architecture and show how you can exploit it to make services and components easily available over the Web. It will show how to create a Web service and how SOAP, XML, and HTTP interoperate to provide a generic transport mechanism for data. You'll also learn techniques for using Web services as facades for COM and other components. This chapter assumes that you're familiar with Web-oriented development, including ASP.NET as covered in Chapter 16.
