Troubleshooting Lab

 < Day Day Up >

In this lab, you will troubleshoot a problem related to monitoring Computer2 by using ICMP. Read the following scenario and then answer the questions that follow. The questions are intended to reinforce key information presented in this chapter. If you are unable to answer a question, review the lessons and try the question again. You can find answers to the questions in the 'Questions and Answers' section at the end of this chapter.

Scenario

You use Computer1 to monitor whether Computer2 is available on the network by using ping. You receive a notification that Computer2 is offline. You investigate and discover that Computer2 is definitely online but is not responding to ping requests. Recently, another administrator was using Computer2 to practice for a certification exam. It is possible that the other administrator's configuration changes caused Computer2 to stop responding to ping requests.

To simulate the administrator's changes, run the batch file named  ch8-computer2.bat, which is included in this book's companion materials.

Questions

  1. Why is Computer2 not responding to ping requests from Computer1?

  2. How should you resolve the problem?

  3. What else could have caused the problem?
