New Features

The following is an alphabetical list of new or thoroughly revamped features in Windows 2000.

Adding and Removing Hardware (Chapter 24)

Adding and removing hardware is easy in Windows 2000, thanks to Plug and Play and the new Add/Remove Hardware Wizard. You'll find the wizard in Control Panel. Open the Start menu and choose Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Hardware.

CD Player and DVD Player (Chapter 36)

Windows 2000 includes the refurbished CD Player that was introduced with Windows 98 Second Edition, as well as DVD Player. You'll find both on the Entertainment menu. Open the Start menu and choose Programs, Accessories, Entertainment.

DriveSpace Agent (Chapter 31)

Windows 2000 doesn't support DriveSpace or third-party disk compression programs. You can compress files and folders on NTFS volumes by means of their properties dialog boxes.

Inbox (Chapter 19)

The Windows Messaging component of Windows NT has been completely replaced by Microsoft Outlook Express—hence, you'll find no Inbox on your desktop. Outlook Express is both an e-mail client program and an Internet newsgroup reader.

My Briefcase (Chapter 10)

My Briefcase has been renamed Briefcase, but it's also been largely supplanted by the Windows 2000 new offline files capability.

Phone Dialer (Chapter 22)

Windows 2000 has a completely new Phone Dialer program. To run it, open the Start menu and choose Programs, Accessories, Communications, Phone Dialer.

Scheduled Tasks (Chapter 14)

To create, edit, or delete a scheduled task in Windows 2000, open Control Panel and choose Scheduled Tasks.
