LET HER BE A MENTOR

In the children’s storybook Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, Mike is challenged to dig the basement of the new Popperville town hall in just one day—an unheard-of feat.

As he is beginning, a little boy comes along. “Do you think you will finish by sundown?” he said to Mike Mulligan.

“Sure,” said Mike, “if you stay and watch us. We always work faster and better when someone is watching us.”

Don’t we all. Ever noticed how your performance is heightened whenever someone is watching? (How about when a police car is behind you on a city street?)

To reward a great employee, ask her to be a mentor to a new hire. With someone watching and learning from her, she will perform at a higher level and it can help to develop her into a future leader.
