While you can get by with performing global manipulations on images, the vast majority of images you'll work with require making a selection. We hope that after almost 60 pages we've done more to allay your fears than to cause you panic when selecting pixels in your image. Remember the two golden rules of selections:

• Masks, channels, and selections are all the same thing.

• You can (and often should) edit a selection after you've made it.

With those firmly planted in your mind, you'll have no problems as you tackle the techniques in the rest of this book.
