This book describes new abstractions for managing data center infrastructures in a service-centric fashion, specifically abstractions presented by Sun's N1 Grid vision and strategy. Part 1 is focused on developing and explaining the fundamental concepts of that vision and strategy. Part 1 includes the following chapters:
Chapter 1 discusses the basic business imperatives, the data center problems, and the evolution of enterprise computing that lead to the development of the N1 Grid vision and strategy. It also discusses the technology trends that shape today's service and infrastructure architectures.
Chapter 2 describes the rationale for the N1 Grid strategy by looking at the trends that drive the data center, and it discusses the basis for solutions to the problems that are inherent in many of today's service and infrastructure implementations.
Chapter 3 describes the desired properties, attributes, and potential routes to realizing the N1 Grid vision.
