Chapter  13.   Backup, Restore, and Duplication

All backup solutions require a certain amount of pre-check activities to occur. Before the backup process begins, you must check that you have sufficient disk space on the target backup source. By calculating the size of the full-text indexes, you can calculate the amount of disk space your backup will consume . Ninety percent of the disk space required for the backup will consist of the Web Storage Space and the indexes.

The SharePoint Portal Server Administration in the Microsoft Management Console provided with Windows 2000 Server provides a view of the full-text index size when you click on the server node. The details pane will provide a list of the workspaces and their index size (see Figure 13.1).

The size of the Web Storage System can be viewed in the directory at the path SharePoint Portal Server\Data\Web Storage System.

If you cannot locate this file, you can access its location information on the SharePoint Portal Server Administration properties page on the Data tab.

It is important that you verify that the following tasks have occurred before executing a backup activity:

  • Valid path for the backup file. The directory must exist, but the file must not because the script will create it. Therefore, you must have a valid path to the location where you want to store this image file.

    CAUTION

If you choose to automate your backups with a script, you must either rename the old file or create a new name for each time a new backup is run.

  • Remote Disk Access. When backing up to a remote location, you must have a sufficient network access account that includes local administrator rights on that server and write access on that remote disk.

NOTE

If you are using the Task Scheduler, the user account that the job has been created with must have the proper permissions.
