New Team Project Wizard

In creating new customized process templates, you must understand how the New Team Project Wizard works. Chapter 19 has an overview of the project creation process. Under the covers, once a project manager selects a project type, a series of plug-ins will launch to create the required project files. The plug-ins will set up the following project elements:

  • Process guidance

  • Iterations, groups, and permissions

  • Default report directory and reports

  • Version control folders with default check-in notes and permissions

  • Work item types, queries, and tasks

  • Team Portal and associated files

  • Other extensibility points

Unlike other process management systems, when you customize a process template, you are not only customizing the documentation, but also modifying the behavior of both Team Foundation Server and Visual Studio 2005. The integrated process methodology and guidance facilitates adoption and drives the generation and collection of project metrics.

This chapter is divided into three distinct sections: In the first section, you'll learn about the tools you need to work with process templates and files. You'll then learn how to tailor your process guidance. In the last part of the chapter, you will learn how to customize your process templates to fit your needs and environment.

Note

For complete information on customizing process templates, see the Process Template Customization Guide, which can be downloaded from the Visual Studio Extensibility Center: http://www.msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/extend/. We encourage you to explore the XML files within your process as one of the best ways of learning how to work with a custom process.
