Chapter 8. Risk Analysis Basics Time Buffer Calculations
When the project team has completed the Gantt chart development described in Chapter 6, they have a working Gantt chart with a precisely identified completion date. This chart is built up with "most of the time" time estimates for each task. We refer to this chart as a working Gantt chart because the completion date is not one to which a project manager can commit. "Most of the time" means not all of the time; a few tasks will take a little less time than estimated and some will take longer than estimated. Therefore, there is still work to be done to arrive at a completion date to which the project manager can commit.
